How to use the Piano & Guitar Chord Finder

  1. Choose a key. Pick the home note and the scale. Major sounds bright, minor sounds darker.
  2. Build your progression. Start from a suggested first chord, then pick each next chord from ideas that fit: strong moves, smooth changes, walking bass lines and borrowed colour chords.
  3. Learn to play it. Every chord shows on the piano keys and as a guitar chord diagram with tab, with inversions, easier versions and capo positions.
  4. Take it further. Play it back at any tempo with a click, share a link, or export a MIDI file for Cubase, Logic, Ableton or any DAW.

Frequently asked questions

What chords are in a key?

Each major or minor key has seven chords built only from the notes of its scale, one on each note. In a major key the pattern is major, minor, minor, major, major, minor, diminished. These chords always sound right together, which is why most songs use mainly them.

How do I choose the next chord in a progression?

Use the Fits next list. Strong moves are the most natural steps in the key, smooth changes share notes with the last chord, walking bass ideas move the bass by one step, and colour chords borrow from outside the key for emotion. Tap any idea to hear the change before you add it.

What is a chord inversion?

An inversion is the same chord with a different note at the bottom. C/E is a C major chord with E in the bass. Inversions make the bass line smoother and keep your hands close together when you change chords.

How does the capo setting work?

Set the capo fret and the guitar view shows the chord shapes you play behind the capo, while the sound stays in the real key. For example, with a capo on fret 2, a G shape sounds as A.

Can I use the chords in my DAW?

Yes. Export MIDI saves your progression with the exact voicings, chord lengths and tempo. Drag the file onto a MIDI track in Cubase, Logic, Ableton, FL Studio or any other DAW.

Is it free?

Yes. There is nothing to install and no sign-up. Your progression is saved in your browser, and Share link gives you a link that opens it again on any device.
