The Amphion Argon7LS is a full-size passive floorstanding loudspeaker from Finland, supplied here as a pair in the Full White finish. It suits music lovers who want the neutral, time-coherent sound of a studio monitor in a speaker that looks at home in a living room, and who have the space and amplifier to let a large tower breathe.

Studio Monitor Thinking in a Home Speaker

Amphion is best known among recording engineers for its studio monitors, and the Argon7LS borrows the same core ideas. It is a two-way design with a 1″ titanium dome tweeter placed between two 6.5″ aluminium-cone woofers. The crossover sits at 1,600 Hz, much lower than most two-way speakers. Amphion’s reasoning is that this keeps the hand-over away from the frequencies our ears are most sensitive to, so the tweeter carries the whole presence region on its own and the speaker behaves more like a single point source.

The tweeter is mounted in a purpose-shaped waveguide. Its job is to control dispersion so that the tweeter’s output blends smoothly with the woofers, and so that tone stays more consistent as you move around the room rather than only in one chair.

Passive Radiators Instead of a Port

The Argon7LS replaced the earlier Argon7L, and the biggest change is how the bass is loaded. Instead of a bass reflex port, two passive radiators on the rear panel do the work. A passive radiator is an unpowered cone that moves with the air pressure inside the cabinet. The result is extended bass, rated down to 28 Hz at the -6 dB point, without the chuffing noise and port resonances a reflex tube can add. It also means the cabinet does not need a large port opening on the front or back.

Built to Last, Built in Finland

Each speaker is handmade in Finland in a braced MDF cabinet that stands 1,158 mm tall on its base plate and weighs 27 kg. Internal wiring is silver-coated copper. On the back you will find the speaker terminals and a small switch that lifts the treble by 1 dB, which is handy if your room is heavily furnished and sounds a little dull, or if you prefer a touch more sparkle. The grilles are interchangeable, so you can keep the clean Full White look or swap in a different colour later.

Setup and Placement Tips

  • Give the back some room. Because the passive radiators fire from the rear, start with the speakers at least 30 cm from the wall behind them and adjust from there for bass balance.
  • Toe them in. Angle each speaker towards the listening position and fine-tune the angle until the centre image locks in.
  • Use the treble switch last. Get placement right first, then decide between 0 and +1 dB. Bright, hard-surfaced rooms usually suit 0 dB.
  • Mind the bass in small rooms. Two 6.5″ woofers plus passive radiators produce a lot of low end. In a small room, more distance from walls or some acoustic treatment and room correction will keep it tidy.

Choosing an Amplifier

Amphion recommends 50 to 150 W per channel. With 91 dB sensitivity the Argon7LS does not need huge power to play loud, but its 4 ohm nominal impedance means the amplifier should be comfortable driving lower-impedance loads. Reviewers have reported the best bass control and dynamics from capable solid-state amplifiers, while lower-powered valve amps can work at moderate levels. Browse our hi-fi amplifiers and, for streaming or computer playback, a quality hi-fi DAC to complete the system.

Who Is It For?

A great fit if you: want a neutral, honest speaker that does not exaggerate bass or treble; listen to a wide range of music at both low and higher volumes; have a medium to large room; and like a clean, modern look that blends in.

Maybe not for you if: your room is very small, your speakers must sit right against the wall, or you are after a bright, highly analytical sound. In those cases a smaller stand-mount or a model designed for near-wall placement may be the better choice.

How It Compares

Argon7LS vs Argon7L: the older Argon7L used a bass reflex port. The Argon7LS switches to passive radiators, which Amphion introduced to avoid the known problems of reflex cabinets, such as port noise and resonance.

Argon7LS vs Argon3LS: both share the same passive radiator concept. The Argon7LS is the larger model, with two 6.5″ woofers per speaker, for bigger rooms and more scale.

Argon7LS vs similar-size floorstanders: in an Australian review, StereoNET compared it with the Spendor D9.2, describing a similar size and ability, and placed its voicing between the energy of a large JBL and the refinement of a Spendor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Amphion Argon7LS sold as a single speaker or a pair?

Amphion lists the Argon7LS per piece, but this listing is for a pair: two speakers in Full White.

Does the Argon7LS need a powerful amplifier?

Not a huge one. Amphion recommends 50 to 150 W. Because the speaker has a 4 ohm nominal impedance, choose an amplifier that is rated to drive 4 ohm loads comfortably.

Can I place the Argon7LS close to the wall?

It works best with some space behind it, because the passive radiators are on the rear panel. Around 30 cm is a sensible starting point, with more space giving tighter bass.

Do I need a subwoofer with the Argon7LS?

Most listeners will not. The speaker reaches 28 Hz (-6 dB), which covers nearly all music. A subwoofer is mainly worth considering for home theatre or very large rooms.

What does the treble switch on the back do?

It raises the tweeter level by 1 dB. Use it to brighten a soft, heavily furnished room, or leave it at 0 dB in a bright room or with hot-sounding recordings.

Can I change the grille colour later?

Yes. The grilles are interchangeable, and Amphion offers a range of colour options, so you can update the look without changing the speakers.
